Secure Research Environment

The University’s Secure Research Environment (SRE) is a highly secure, isolated virtual desktop environment with on premises storage and scalable computational resources.

The SRE has been assessed by the UoM Cybersecurity team as being suitable for the processing, analysis and storage of research data classified up to ‘Red’ by the University’s Research Data Classification Framework. The SRE has also received ISO27001 certification, the industry best practice standard for certification of information security management systems.

The SRE offers many features to ensure the protection of sensitive research data while enabling research:
- On-premises dedicated infrastructure with per project isolation
- Secure remote access to your research data 24/7 from anywhere in the world
- Scalable based on your project’s computational and storage requirements
- Access by authorised users only with logged and monitored activity.
- Restricted internet and internal UoM network access.
- Data in the SRE never leaves the UoM network and transfer of data out of the system is mediated through a governed approval process with a nominated data custodian. This process ensures only non-identifiable outputs are removed.
- Enhanced cybersecurity controls including multi factor authentication, firewall protection, data encryption, 24/7 monitoring and more.
