Export controls and sanctions

Export controls limit the international transfer of assets and data from defence research, or that have any potential military and/or ‘dual use’ applications. ‘Dual use’ refers to information or technology that is intended for civilian or commercial user, but that could also be used to serve a military purpose.

If export controls or sanctions apply to your research project, you may need to obtain a permit prior to transferring or sharing data outside Australia. The University’s Export Controls team can help you identify if export controls or sanctions are applicable, and subsequently assist with acquiring permits, additional regulator applications and any general enquiries and assessments.
